Lucknow is one of India’s oldest and most historic cities with a rich cultural heritage. Once the capital of the Awadh region, it is renowned for its beautiful architecture, historical monuments and refined cuisine.
Lucknow’s nawabs, best remembered for their extravagant lifestyles, were patrons of the arts and built several important monuments and buildings (Bara & Chota Imambaras, etc.) in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1856, the British East India Company abolished local rule and took complete control of the city along with the rest of Awadh. Today Lucknow is the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Lucknow is also a very special city to Rohini’s family. Rohini’s grandmother is from Lucknow and Rohini’s father spent many happy years in Lucknow during high school.
Finally, the wedding venue, Hotel Lebua, was formerly an estate belonging to a prominent lucknowi family. It bears a striking resemblance to Devina’s magnificent ancestral home in Allahabad. The home was demolished in 2013 but it exists forever fondly in our hearts.
